CROPS NATIVE TO THE AMERICAS

Corn, beans, yucca, cocoa, tobacco and pineapple are crops native to the Americas.

Corn was highly significant for indigenous communities during the colonial period. Cocoa was cultivated in the Caribbean and tobacco in the Central Valley, primarily for domestic consumption. Today, Costa Rica is the world’s leading producer of pineapples in the north, Central Caribbean and South Pacific regions.
