RECOVERY OF THE NAÍ SPHERE

The Naí sphere, now identified with the number MNCR-35595, was recovered thanks to the family that kept it decorating their garden for many years. Faced with the prohibition of having patrimonial goods as private possessions, in the year 2022, they gave this sphere to the National Museum.

Icterus galbula hembra

There is no information on the date when it was moved from its original site in the south of the country to the city of San José. It is impossible to tell what other artifacts were around or where it was. It is impossible to say whether there were more spheres like it. It is impossible to determine how the image carved in high relief was positioned. All the information about its origin was lost when it was extracted without any scientific control.

Preserving the pre-Columbian stone spheres in their original place is a great challenge. This is the only way to understand and study these marvelous creations of the native peoples of the South Pacific of Costa Rica.
