Many of the services offered by the Department of Natural History benefit multiple users: university students, primary and high school students, teachers, university professors, researchers, and the general public.
Our main services are described below: Staff-guided tours through the collections: It is appropriate for groups of students or other organized groups. You can request it with a letter addressed to the Management of Natural History explaining the objective of the visit, date, time, and contact. Requests for staff-guided tours must be submitted with at least a two-week notice. Consultation to collection materials: This service is given to researchers (either students or professionals). You can request it by means of a letter indicating your concern or need to consult the collections and get their information within a research project. In such letter, the researcher commits to acknowledge the institution under any circumstance the data obtained may be used. Consultation to specialists: This service can be granted by means of a verbal request directly to the specialist or the Management of the Department. It responds to as diverse queries as users. Our specialists can assist you on the areas of Botany, Entomology (insects), Ornithology (birds), Mastozoology, and Geology (fossils, rocks, minerals). Logistics to identify botanic, zoologic, and geologic materials: It counsels students on the appropriate use of basic tools to identify biologic material through bibliographic information related to our collections or existing in the Hector Gamboa Library. Those interested in this counseling can ask for it directly at the institution.
Specialized lectures: The National Museum of Costa Rica gives lectures on Natural History related to the fields it deals with: Entomology, Ornithology, Mastozoology, Botany, and Geology. This service is offered to the general public and follows a definite planning program. Eventually, lectures can become part of staff-guided tours.
