The Park of Stone Spheres

In the Osa deparment is one of the more important archaeological deposits of the country, where the National Museum, in coordination with the community, tries to create and to open to the public the second archaeological park of Costa Rica. "In this zone the indications show the presence of an important pre-Columbian establishment", commented Francisco Corrals, director of the National Museum.

The creation of the thematic park has happened through different stages: first of them it consisted of the acquisition and holding ground where are the archaeological vestiges; soon the archaeological investigations have been made to evaluate the degree of conservation of the there present structures and to be able to determine their integrity, and finally the signaling of the place will take place, the routes will draw up and an exhibition center will rise. Also it is tried to recover the original vegetation, for which the identification of the flora of the zone on the part of the Department of Natural History of the Museum has been made.

In the place, the archaeologist Adrián Badilla next to a group of professionals found two knolls of around 25 meters of diameter. One of them has a stone incline of about 18 meters in length. These structures are near alignments "in situ" of stone spheres in different sizes.

The creation of the archaeological park is an integral project, because parallelly to him an investigation is being made on history of the zone, on the part of the historian Gabriela Villalobos. Indeed, like an attractiveness more, in a representative house of the bananero period, a room of exhibitions will be located that will illustrate the different historical stages in the life from the Osa deparment.

"the room will make a route first by the Pre-Columbian Period, followed by the Colonization. It continues in the middle of the Thirties when the bananera activity enters to the zone, to finalize the route with the crisis of end of the eighty with the exit of the bananeras. Its location next to the school of the place tries to integrate the students, so that tour guides of the historical center are they them ", expressed Villalobos.

Groups of the community, like the Local Committee of the Area of Conservation of Osa (CLACOSA), AsoDiquís and SURCOOP, have worked very close by with the project. SURCOOP, for example, "looks for financing for an integral project of recovery of the tourism in the Osa deparment, that in addition to the economic benefit for the population, also helps to recover attractive the tourist one, to present and to preserve the archaeological legacy of the region", affirmed Liborio Sequeira, President of the Administrative Council of SURCOOP.

One hopes that after two years, the national and foreign public can know this wealth archaeological that is part of the historical patrimony of Costa Rica.

The park will be conformed by four sectors. First of them it lodges at least 5 stone spheres in situ, which perfectly are aligned to each other; the second quadrant presents/displays two knolls of 25 meters of diameter and associate structures; in the third sector the spheres of stone will be placed that were removed and recovered and in the fourth sector is located an area with great amounts of ceramic fragments. In addition, it is had predicted to make a footpath that crosses the most important points of the park and that it could reproduce a pre-Columbian design.
