Department of Natural History
The Department of Natural History (DNH) manages the oldest and most complete collections of Natural History of the country. At least 15% of the samples included in these collections are from the late XIX century and early XX century. The rest corresponds to material collected throughout the second half of the XX century. The collections of Natural History are increased every year as a result of the research performed at the DNH. Its overall growth increases in around 2,000 samples yearly.

Objectives

  • To learn and document the natural heritage of Costa Rica.
  • To carry out investigations in the fields of biological diversity and environment.
  • To manage and endow the collections of Natural History.
  • To contribute to the public awareness of the Natural Heritage of Costa Rica.
